Spiritual Practices for Challenging Times: Reading Harry Potter as a Sacred Text
Monday, October 16 7:00 p.m.
It’s been more than twenty years since the first Harry Potter book was published. In that time it has become the best-selling book series in history and beloved by at least a generation. Reading Harry Potter as a sacred text is the brainchild of three students at Harvard Divinity School, who turned a book study group into a popular podcast.
What can we learn by using ancient spiritual practices to closely read a thoroughly modern book as Unitarian Universalists? We will begin with book 1, chapter 1: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. We will learn three different practices used on other holy books for at least a millennium.
Part book group, part spiritual practices group, we will read, chapter by chapter, using one of each of the seven principles as a lens.
The first session will be seven weeks beginning Monday, October 16, at 7:00pm in the Narthex. For more information, please contact Kathleen McGregor at firstname.lastname@example.org.
