One day, the whole Jericho Road must be transformed so that men and women will not be beaten and robbed as they make their journey through life. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it understands that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.
– Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., from the speech Beyond Vietnam (April 1967)
Jericho Road Pasadena was spearheaded by members of Neighborhood Church nearly 6 1/2 years ago. Many of the founding members (John Blue, Barbara Eaton, Dick Hirrel, Fran Neuman, Rev. Hannah Petrie) along with several other church members and friends continue to volunteer as Jericho Road advisors and as pro bono professionals through Jericho Road projects.
A powerful community of nonprofit organizations, such as Pasadena, enhances the quality of life in cities and towns, particularly those with low-income populations. Often, nonprofits entrusted with serving others are in great need themselves due to over-extended staff and underfunded programming. Professionals who support nonprofits by volunteering their time and expertise can bridge this gap.
Jericho Road’s volunteers have provided over 9,000 hours of free professional expertise to nonprofit organizations since its beginnings, a savings of $810,000 within our local non-profit community. A few examples of projects by church members who have donated time and skills:
- Business planning for Animal Tracks
- Accounting for Mothers Helping Others
- Informational video for Professional Child Development Associates
- Article writing and editing for Pasadena Senior Center
- Board Development for Pasadena Meals on Wheels
Whether it’s working on a short-term project or serving on a nonprofit board, skilled volunteers help local nonprofits expand their reach into more lives.
Between services on October 23rd, Jericho Road Board members and Executive Director Melanie Goodyear will be on the patio. Are you part of a non-profit that needs some skilled help to solve a problem or a volunteer willing to lend your marketing or other professional skills to a local non-profit?
Or perhaps you are interested in joining a non-profit Board! Qualified board members are a huge need in the community. Back by popular demand, Jericho Road’s innovative board development training program, The Leadership Connection (TLC) will be offered again on January 24 and 31 and February 7, 2017. Learn how to join a board and be a great board member.
At Jericho Road Pasadena, we bridge communities by matching the professional talents of volunteers with the needs of community-based nonprofit organizations and businesses to promote community development, strengthen social services, and enrich lives. When volunteers and nonprofits connect this way, they share the work and build better communities . . . together.
