As Gregory Boyd announced earlier this month, Neighborhood Church has begun the process of hiring our next Director of Religious Education (DRE).  To assist in this process, Rev. Lissa Gundlach has appointed a five-person search committee, on which I am pleased to serve.

Religious education is an important topic for me.  As a multiyear member and current chairperson of Neighborhood’s Religious Education (RE) Committee, I’ve helped to plan, support, and evaluate religious education programming alongside my fellow RE committee members under the direction of Sara LaWall and Gregory Boyd. It is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to help develop and implement programs that address the needs, learning styles, and dynamics of our church community.  Religious education, particularly programs for children and youth, is a significant reason families seek out Neighborhood, and very often provides the spark for institutional and personal connections that keep members at church long after their children have grown. As the parent of two children, Neighborhood’s RE offerings were certainly the reason I was drawn to our church.

So with this in mind, you can see why when Lissa invited me to join the search committee, I readily accepted.  Having been involved in religious education programming in the past and present, how could I not want to be a part of its future?

Since convening for the first time in early October, the search committee has been hard at work drafting the DRE job description.  The DRE will be responsible for lifespan programming, which includes programs for children, youth, and adults.  She or he will work under the direction of our Senior Minister to continue our outstanding programs and to cultivate and implement new programs to meet the needs of our congregation.

The job description has been posted and the application period is open. The search committee will assist in reviewing applicants and make recommendations for those to be interviewed. We hope candidate interviews could begin as early as next month.

We know how important the DRE is to our community, so we will keep you updated on the process through Neighborhood’s blog.  In the meantime, should you have any questions, you can reach the search committee at
